Report of the Alabama Delegation to the American Medical Association Annual Meeting
June 16-20, 2012

Representing the Medical Association of the State of Alabama at the Annual Meeting of the AMA’s House of Delegates, June 16-20, 2012, were delegates Drs. Jeff Terry (Mobile), chairman; Jorge Alsip (Daphne); Richard Esham (Mobile); and alternate-delegates Drs. Allan Goldstein (Birmingham), vice-chairman;  Melissa Behringer (Huntsville); and Michael Flanagan (Dothan).  MASA Board Chairman, George “Buddy” Smith, Jr., MD (Lineville), and MASA President, T. Michael Harrington, MD, (Birmingham) also served.  Dr. Goldstein served on the reference committee dealing with AMA Finance and Governance.  Dr. Esham continued to represent the Alabama Delegation in the Senior Physician Group.

Representing MASA at the Young Physicians Section were Drs. Elizabeth Jacobson (Hoover) and Beverly Jordan (Enterprise).  Resident/Fellow Section representatives were Drs. Trista Marshall (UAB) and Jeremy Moore (USA).

MASA General Counsel, Les Hayes, continued his term on the Executive Committee of the AMA Litigation Center.  The Litigation Center is represented by all 50 state medical associations, the District of Columbia and the AMA.  It provides research and support for its member organizations on issues such as scope of practice and medical staff due process.

Note:  MASA’s delegation to the AMA was reduced to three delegates and alternates from its previous five.

Fewer delegates and alternates reduce MASA’s ability to represent the physicians of Alabama in this national forum.  MASA members who are not members of the AMA are asked to reconsider their decisions to stay on the sidelines with the multitude of challenges facing the medical profession at this time.  To join, visit the AMA website
